Title: 1863 Pattern 1¢. Judd-299, Pollock-359. Rarity-3. Bronze. Plain Edge. MS-63 BN PCGS. CAC
Header: Lustrous 1863 Pattern Indian 1¢
Description: Dies as illustrated, aligned 360° or medal turn. This brightly lustrous rose-gold specimen represents the Mint’s first experimentation with bronze for small cent coinage. Though somewhat available compared to most patterns – some 200 or so are known – there is enough collecting pressure from pattern specialists and Indian cent collectors that the acquisition of a pleasing specimen such as this is not always an easy task. The present piece is the sole BN Mint State representative of the type at PCGS, and there are also two RB examples, both MS-63 and the only examples in the RB category; there are no RD examples extant.
PCGS Population: 1; none finer within the BN designation. There are also 2 MS-63 RB designations for the issue, with none finer.
