1860 Campaign. Hartford Wide-Awakes. DeWitt-AL-40. Brass. MS-66 PL NGC.

28 mm. This intensely lustrous Gem offers strong motifs lightly dusted with frost and set against bright lemon-yellow mirrors. Essentially mark-free as the grade attests, and the finest certified by NGC by three grading points! An exceptional Gem example of this rare tribute to the Lincoln youth movement.
The Hartford Wide Awakes were formed in early March, 1860 when a small group of boys, reportedly just five in number, formed a marching society in support of Abraham Lincoln. Garbed in black, they attracted numbers of young men nightly with their eerie silent, torchlit, late night marches and their black uniforms. The movement started in Hartford, Connecticut, and by year’s end, there were chapters – some which morphed into paramilitary groups – across the Northeast in most of the major cities. The movement even penetrated as far south as Baltimore, and as far west as St. Louis. It is estimated at one point that hundreds of thousands of American youths were members of the Wide-Awakes, even after Lincoln’s election and the outbreak of the Civil War.
