1859-S EF-45 PCGS. OGH.
This medium steel gray specimen exhibits a pale lilac glow on both sides. The strike is strong – San Francisco knew how to space the dies – and other than some tiny ticks that present themselves under low magnification, the in-hand appeal is substantial. Only 80,000 quarters of the date were struck -- $20,000 face value –and that modest quantity was eaten up almost immediately by local commerce; neither PCGS nor NGC has seen a Mint State ’59-S quarter! Indeed, the combined total for grading events at the two firms is 120 pieces, the vast majority of which are VF or lower, mostly lower! This is a rarity that appears only occasionally in the marketplace at EF or finer. When an EF-45 1859-S does make an appearance, the specialists will line up for a shot at the prize – mark our words. Housed in an old “second generation” holder. We can’t wait to see the action on this lot.

PCGS Population: 7; 7 finer (AU-55 finest).
