Header: Lustrous Mint State 1859-D Gold $1
Description: This frosty and lustrous yellow-gold beauty is remarkably fine for the assigned grade. The satiny surfaces reveal lively olive iridescence throughout. The strike is as bold as any Dahlonega Mint gold dollar of any date you may ever see, and the luster is completely unbroken, even on the highest design points. Estimates range from 300 to 50 or so survivors, most of those in EF and AU. Despite the mintage of 4,952 pieces, this date is elusive in Mint State with perhaps only 15-25 coins known all told in spite of the inflated populations at the third-party graders. Of the two varieties of the date, the present one is the one most often encountered. The eye appeal here far exceeds the given grade. Don’t let this one get away.
