1858 Small Eagle, Reverse of 1858 – Low Leaves. J-207a. P-244. S-PT16d. High R7. PR64 PCGS (PS). OGH. Choice Proof (11: 3,4,4). Nickel.
This is a very rare example of the Small Eagle design paired with the reverse of 1858 with the Low Leaves but in nickel instead of the typical alloy in use for the regular issue cents. Only three examples are known – this piece, another PR64 and a PR64 CAM – all from PCGS.
The mirrors are good and there are very few marks. There is a spot on the right wing of the eagle and a few light spots on the reverse. The coin has a bright silvery hue and is instantly recognizable as something special. Earlier from the King Farouk collection, from where it went to Abe Kosoff. From Kosoff it went into the 1956 Metropolitan NY sale. Recent auction appearances are Mid-American “Robertson” 5/85:795; Bowers and Merena “Rarities” 1/97: 389; Steve Brewer.
