1858 Small Eagle, Laurel Wreath – 5 leaf. J-202a. P-245. S-PT19. R5. PR64 PCGS (PS). 1st. Gen. Holder. Gem Proof (10: 3,3,4).
The Small Eagle by Anthony Paquet, Assistant Engraver. This design was an attempt at a very low relief design intended to increase the life of the production dies. The Eagle is quite different from the eagle in use in 1858 and is a favorite for collectors due to this quirky look. Only 75 example were struck. PCGS has 19 grading events with only 10 graded higher.
This example has medium mirrors and very few marks. It is likely worthy of a grade higher.
