1858 Flying Eagle cent - Small Letters, Ornamental Shield reverse. J-193. P-236. S-PT11. R5. PR63 PCGS (PS). OGH. Choice Proof (10: 3,3,4).
A popular addition to the 12-piece cent sets sold by the Mint. Only 75 sets were made in 1858 and a few additional pieces of certain die pairs were made in larger quantities. No additional examples of this die pair were struck, so its mintage is only 75 pieces. The Flying Eagle obverse cent patterns from this set generally get higher interest than the Small Eagle and Indian Head die combinations.
This example has medium mirrors and a light golden tone. Only some old time light debris is all that possibly keeps it from a higher grade. The obverse die (Obv. 11 – Full U in UNITED, left edge of 1 between denticles) was previously unlisted in Snow.
