1858 Flying Eagle cent / Oak Wreath. J-192, P-235, S-PT13. Rarity 5. PR65 PCGS Gem Proof (12: 3,4,5) Copper-nickel.
A high-quality example of this popular die combination. The obverse shows good mirrors. There is a light planchet flake by the eagle’s head.
A set of 12 Flying Eagle and Indian cent patterns were sold by the Mint from 1858 until about 1860. These included the Proof 1858 Small Letter Flying Eagle cent and eleven other pattern die combinations made from three obverse dies and four reverse dies tested that year. Today we look upon the Proof 1858 Small Letter Flying Eagle cent as a regular issue. It was only available in the 12-piece pattern sets. Collectors today attempt to collect these twelve coins.
