1858 Flying Eagle cent – Large Letters, Ornamental Shield reverse. J-198. P-239. S-PT3. R7. PR62 PCGS (PS). OGH. Typical Proof (11: 3,4,4).
A very scarce addition to the various Pattern cents made in 1858. The Large Letters obverse was being retired in 1858 and as such it was pertinent to the design choosing process. However, the dies were available to be used and about 20 examples were struck.
This example has good mirrors and very few marks. There is a spot on the right wing. The reverse die is slightly rotated to the right, which is normal for all this issue.
