1856 Octagonal ¼ Dollar, BG-111. Die State I (perfect dies) Scarce. MS63 PCGS.
An original issue, certainly minted in 1856. When the S.S. Central America sank Sept. 12, 1857 (passengers boarded the S.S. Sonora in San Francisco Aug. 20, 1857), several passengers had examples of this type mixed with their gold dust, a century later to be panned out from the mud recovered from the wreckage; two of these coins are a later die state than this. Similar to preceding except for date. Lovely rose toning, with gold highlights. Ex Jay Roe Collection; plate coin in Breen-Gillio, second edition, ex NASCA Elliott sale 5/2/1979, lot 3416.

Ex: Famous Jay Roe Collection.
