1856 Flying Eagle cent, Ornamental shield. J-184. P-220. S-PT1a. R6. PR61 PCGS (PS), OGH. Proof (10: 3,3,4). Copper-Nickel.
A very popular variant with the Ornamental shield reverse. Only 12 examples are known. The obverse die is the Obv. 2 die (Snow) which was used for striking the original Proof issue, Snow-5 and the later issue, Snow-4. The Ornamental Wreath design was one of the designs used for the 1858 12-piece Pattern sets sold by the Mint.
The mirrors are good and the grade reflects a few light hairlines below the eagle. There is a lint strike-through by the rim at 8:00. The reverse die is rotated about 10 degrees counter-clockwise.
