Title: 1855 Pattern 1¢. Judd-171A, Pollock-196. Rarity-8. German Silver. Plain Edge. Proof-40 NGC
Header: Scarce 1855 Flying Eagle Cent Pattern
Description: Dies as illustrated. Modestly worn throughout but not noticeably marked. Our guess is the present coin was a pocket piece judging by the smooth and even mark-free silver-gray surfaces, though it may just as well seen circulation during the Civil War coinage shortages of just a few years later. (We can’t help but wonder how many merchants would have accepted this piece during the length of time needed in circulation to produce this amount of wear, and how many would have passed it out again in pocket change as a cent?) An elusive off-metal pattern cent issue.
NGC Census: 2; 5 finer (Proof-62 finest).
