1855 Large Flying Eagle cent. J-173. P-198. S-PT2. Rarity 6. PR63BN PCGS (Eagle Eye Photo Seal). Choice Proof (13: 3,5,5) BN. Bronze. Two leaves under E in STATES.
Same dies as the previous lot. Early die state with die striations from 11:00 to 5: 00 on the obverse and from 11:00 to 5:00 on the reverse. Die striations are on the die and are preferred to see on patterns as they typically convey original surfaces and good mirrors. The coin looks undergraded and it is possible that the die striations were unfairly viewed as a grade-lowering factor. The coin has a purple tone when tilted in the light, and indication of long term storage in an envelope. It is fully struck with all stars and the wing tips full.
This is much harder to find compared to the 1855 Large Flying Eagle with four leaves under the E in STATES. Only fifteen example are graded by PCGS. The coin is in a 1st generation holder from the early days of grading at PCGS.
Est $5,000 - $8,000
