1855 Large Flying Eagle cent. J-172. S-PT2. Rarity 6. PR65BN PCGS (Eagle Eye Photo Seal). Gem Proof (11: 3,4,4) BN. Copper. Two leaves under E in STATES.
The 1855 Large Flying Eagle cent on a reduced size copper planchet. The eagle is a lower relief version of the eagle used on the 1854 cent patterns. The reverse is the same die used in 1854 with the wreath having two leaves under the E in STATES. An irregularly shaped mound in the center of the die is a clash mark from when this die was earlier paired with a Coronet Liberty head die.
This example is very well struck with nearly all stars full. The eagle’s wing tip is full. Only a light scattering of marks is visible.
An estimated 40 examples are known, divided evenly between copper and bronze issue. The Judd reference lists the nearly identical compositions separately, while the Pollock reference combines them. The listing in the Snow Attribution Guide lists them together. This is much scarcer than the 1855 Flying Eagle with four leaves under the E in STATES, J-167. PCGS has graded only eleven examples as J-172 (copper) and another fifteen as J-173 (bronze).
