Title: 1855-D Gold $1. Winter 7-I. AU-58 NGC..
Header: Choice AU 1855-D Gold $1 Rarity
Description: Lustrous deep yellow-gold with olive highlights, and with plenty of frost in the protected areas. Typical strike for the date with some central obverse weakness and moderately strong clash marks. The reverse is heavily clashed with Liberty’s portrait in bold attendance; the 8 in the date is weak and nearly missing, with a rough surface almost suggesting die rust. Additionally, a die crack caresses the D mintmark in this advanced state. Perhaps the second rarest of all Dahlonega Mint gold dollars, its mintage of 1,811 pieces is the lowest of the Type II issues, 1854-1855, and is among the lowest of the series for any mint. It is thought that just 75 to 100 pieces can be accounted for in all grades, and only about 20 or so of those survivors can stake claims to true AU – in Mint State the date is a formidable rarity with just a half dozen or so coins extant. A grand opportunity for an advanced gold dollar or Dahlonega Mint specialist. NGC Census: 14; 5 finer (MS-64 finest)
