This is one of 3500 of these 2 ½ ounce gold pieces struck from transfer dies of the original Kellogg & Company 1855 dies—today considered one of the greatest pioneer-- if not in all of numismatic-- artifacts. Minted and labeled on various dates (this one is August 20, 2001) from the day the S. S. Central America sailed from San Francisco for New York City until it sunk off the coast of North Carolina
The gold came from melted down Kellogg & Humbert gold ingots found on the shipwreck . The coins were then marketed and sold by the California Marketing Group and carried the imprimatur of the California Historical Society which received some of the proceeds).
