1854-S Gold $10. Genuine - Rim Damage - AU Details PCGS. This deep yellow-gold specimen is awash with bright luster, plenty of mint bloom in the protected areas, and a crisp presentation throughout that adds greatly to the overall appeal. The PCGS qualifier amounts to small rim incisions, one at 2 and another at 3 o’clock on the obverse, and conversely at 3 and 4 o’clock on the reverse rim. No other distractions are immediately evident to the unaided eye, and a magnified excursion reveals some faint scratches beneath the eagle’s dexter (eagle’s right, viewer’s left) wing, trivial at best in our estimation. Collectors seeking gold coins from the first year of San Francisco Mint operations must rely on a gold dollar, an eagle, or a double eagle – the quarter eagle and half eagle of the date are both major rarities, with the half eagle at the top of the list with only four known examples.
The reverse of this piece is from a die with a nearly continuous die crack throughout the peripheral letters, and with a tear-drop shaped die chip in the field above the upper right serif of the M in AMERICA.
