Here is a bright and lustrous eagle from the first year of coinage production at the San Francisco Mint. An abundance of frisky mint frost outlines the design elements. Lightly scattered surface marks betray its brief stay in commerce, though no singular blemish will draw the viewer’s eye; a glass is more revealing in this instance. A network of spidery die cracks encircles the reverse. Choice overall.
The need for small denomination gold coins in the region was pressing, and San Francisco stepped up to the plate in its debut year with a press run of eagles that amounted to 123,826 pieces. Gold dollars saw a smaller demand and only 14,632 pieces were struck. Quarter eagles and half eagles were almost an afterthought, with just 246 and 268 pieces struck respectively – both denominations are great rarities today! Double eagles, soon to become the workhorse of the local economy, were churned out to the tune of 141,468 pieces.
