1854 Large Flying Eagle cent. J-165B. P-191. S-PT4. Rarity 7. PR62BN PCGS. Typical Proof (7: 2,3,2) BN. Bronze. Three Leaves under E in STATES.
A very rare die pairing with an obverse die different from anything used on 1854 large flying eagles and a reverse not found on any other pattern. Only five examples are traced, with one in the Smithsonian. The remaining three examples are all pictured on PCGS CoinFacts website. The finest example, a PR64RB sold in 2010 for $18,400.
It is unknown why this die was made and why only a handful exist. This piece has a slight weakness on the eagle left wing and breast feathers as well as on the corresponding area on the reverse – on the ON of ONE. This is typical of this issue. The surfaces have a dull matte surface. This is a rare opportunity to catch one of the rarities of the Flying Eagle cent pattern series.
