1854 F D Round One Dollar, BG-603. AU50 PCGS.
Even in Gold Rush San Francisco, the jewelers who made small California gold pieces were not certain that a dollar emulating the U.S. coin, but containing less gold, could be minted with perfect safety, because of a certain well-known law. Consequently, all round dollars are Rare, and Period One round dollars are Rarer than those of Period Two. Thus, they are the key to every type set of small California gold coins, from the short set of six pieces—one of each denomination and shape—to every larger type and Registry™ Set. Of course they are highly desired for complete sets as well.

Broad bust of Liberty, 13 5-pointed stars around, star divides F D; CALIFORNIA GOLD around wreath with 13 berries left and 11 right, 1 in opening, DOLLAR/ 1854 within. Signed by Frontier, Deviercy & Co. Very Rare. Bright gold color, scarcely noticeable rub, apparently downgraded due to reddish toning patch on obverse. The PCGS XF40 Totheroh coin brough $23,500.
