Title: 1854-D Gold $1. Winter 6-H; Only Die Pair. MS-61 NGC..
Header: Elusive Mint State 1854-D Type I Gold $1
Description: This satiny and lustrous example of the date is alive with pale rose iridescence, and frosty mint bloom engages the peripheries. The obverse die features a heavy raised diagonal die line from the tip of Liberty’s nose downward and seemingly piercing her lips, and the reverse exhibits a large patch of raised die polish lines at the bottom of the wreath and around the mintmark. The mintage for the date of 2,935 pieces is far and away the lowest of any Type I Dahlonega gold dollar issue. Indeed, the Winter reference considers it among the most elusive of all gold dollars from Georgia’s federal mint. Perhaps 100 to 125 or so examples of the date are known, with the preponderance of the pieces EF to AU. A dozen or so Mint State coins can also be numbered among the population, but they seldom come to market unless a specialized collection such as the Anacortes Collection comes up for bids. Here is a lot to keep an eye out for.
