1853 Octagonal ¼ Dollar Breen-Gillio (BG)-101. Die State III (rust and nose “broken,” from overpolishing die). MS63 NGC.
The only octagonal quarter dollar issued by Joseph Brothers, the first firm to make California 25¢ and 50¢ gold pieces, according to the statement of Nathan Joseph (the youngest brother) in 1924. Small head, 9 stars around; denomination curved, date below. Very neat and professional work, as would be expected from these Liverpool watchmakers, goldsmiths, silversmiths, and jewelers. Known to have actually been issued in 1853: five examples were recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Winfield Scott, which sailed December 1, 1853. Rare. Lovely bright Choice Uncirculated, with a few brownish adhesions on the reverse.
