“1853” Liberty Head Octagonal $1 Die on Shaft. Overall EF+ for Condition.
Of the style typically found mated with the familiar reverse that harbors a bear within a wreath with the numeral 1 above. One of the “Lantern-Jaw” look-likes. Impressions from this die have fooled the uninitiated no doubt since the time of their arrival on the scene in the late 19th or early-to-mid 20th century. The die face is bright silver-gray with some traces of light rusting and with a chip out of one of the lower corner angles. Faint rust is on the die shaft as well as a sticker reading “500.” An interesting die that would find itself at home in a California Small Denomination gold collection.
