1852 Wass, Molitor & Co. $5. Small Head, Rounded Bust. Kagin-1. Rarity-Low R-7. AU-50 PCGS.
This issue is remarkably similar in appearance to the federal half eagles of the era, especially on the obverse. The underlying luster of this piece is substantial enough to float warm olive, blue, and rose iridescence on both sides. The strike is bold on the obverse but a trifle light on the reverse, not at all unusual for the type. Die alignment about 150 degrees. Choice for the grade and among the finest seen to date by PCGS.

This issue is much rarer than commonly thought and in high demand as a denomination as well as a type. If you don't win this one, it may be a long time until you find another.

PCGS Population: 3; 4 finer (MS-60 finest).
