The satiny fields and contrasting frosted motifs of this bright and impressively lustrous yellow-gold specimen share equally in the outright beauty. This amazing little Gem Type I gold dollar is as sharp as you will ever see in a gold dollar of the type. Every one of Longacre’s intended design details are crisp and individually rendered. On the obverse each hair strand, facial feature, and star detail is present, and the reverse is equally sharp, even at the center. Undeniably choice – a great piece to study and a grand beginning to a high-grade gold dollar set or type collection!
Struck from a die that was heavily polished in an attempt to remove die clash marks; raised die polish lines and the absence of certain wreath details are the result. Additionally, an interesting pair of small arcing raised die lines curve in the field just behind Liberty’s mid-tresses; they appear like a pair of matched atolls viewed from high above.
