Title: 1852-D Gold $1. Winter 4-E; Only Die Pair. MS-61 NGC..
Header: Mint State 1852-D Gold $1
Description: The frosty and lustrous honey-gold obverse lightens somewhat on the modestly reflective reverse. Nicely struck and boldly lustrous with heavy obverse clash marks around Liberty’s portrait, including the D of DOLLAR at Liberty’s mouth, and notable impressions of the reverse wreath at her forehead and neck! The reverse exhibits numerous raised die polish lines. Among the scarcest of the Type I Dahlonega Mint gold dollar issues in Uncirculated grades, more so than its mintage of 6,360 pieces indicates; most of the known survivors run together in the EF to AU range, and fewer than a dozen Mint State coins are thought to be available to today’s collecting community. No doubt many of those survivors are currently locked away in advanced gold dollar or Dahlonega Mint specialty cabinets. An opportunity that won’t come this way again soon!
