1852 Augustus Humbert. USAOG, San Francisco. $10. Kagin-12a. Reeded Edge. 884 THOUS. Rarity-5. EF-45 PCGS.
No punctuation after THOUS, O(FFICE) below I(TED), incomplete upper frame line, wide gap over ED in UNITED. Bright yellow gold throughout with pale olive highlights and lively retained luster in the protected areas. Evenly worn but with much central detail still apparent. Only lightly marked despite its size and gold content; circulation and the deep Atlantic Ocean were both kind to this specimen. On the reverse the first-glance diagonal die crack that runs rim to rim from 2:30 to 8:30 turns out to be a planchet lamination, as struck, that has deeply toned.

This golden voyager on the ill-fated Central America is desirable for its historic background – a coin with a story to tell – and its numismatic importance as a Gold Rush-era circulating medium. Housed in a special PCGS gold foil label holder and designated from the S.S. Central America treasure, # SSCA 7216.
