1852 Augustus Humbert. USAOG, California. $10. Kagin-10. Reeded Edge. 884 THOUS:. Rarity-5. EF-45 PCGS.
Punctuation after THOUS, A(SSAYER) over F(ORNIA). Bright yellow gold throughout with olive iridescence throughout and a splash here and here of crisp orange. Lightly marked in places from the five years of circulation it experienced before its trip to the bottom of the briny deep, but long-term submersion had no overt visual effects. Struck from a late state of the die with heavy crumbling at UNITED, less so at STATES, and with the viewer’s left of the coin showing evidence of rust in the die. An exciting coin, probably from the personal belongings of someone who had picked the piece out of circulation in San Francisco before boarding ship for Panama, then from there boarding the Central America in late summer, 1857, sailing out into the Atlantic and the annals of maritime history. Housed in a special PCGS gold foil label holder and designated from the S.S. Central America treasure, # SSCA 7014.
