Description: Dies as illustrated. The lustrous medium gold surfaces exhibit soft but consistent luster, especially where fully struck, but they nearly appear worn elsewhere – metal flow into the design high points was not a typical occurrence with these big “slugs,” and a fully struck specimen is a thing of great beauty. Nearly as fine as you’ll find in an NGC holder, and we imagine the finest of the lot, a solitary MS-65 example, is safely away in an advanced cabinet. For comparison, PCGS has seen a solitary MS-63 coin, as here, and another solitary MS-64 piece with nothing finer. Perhaps the most readily available of the Humbert $50 issues, Kagin-6 often draws collectors into the historic Pioneer Gold series. After all, it’s pretty difficult to resist a large, octagonal, historical coin from the California Gold Rush when the opportunity arises!
NGC Census: 6; 1 finer (MS-65).
