Description: Dies as illustrated. The deep lemon-yellow surfaces of this lustrous piece of California Gold Rush history are somewhat reflective in the protected design areas. This popular Gold Rush “slug” was struck when Augustus Humbert was United States Assayer of Gold, California, just a few years after the Eureka! moment at Sutter’s Mill and the onslaught of the fabled ‘49ers. Fully brilliant where struck, and a trifle dull, like native gold, on the high points where the dies never caressed the soft metal planchet. The first of the Kagin Humbert $50 issues with the “Target” reverse without the familiar central “50” or many-pointed star of the earlier issues of the date and denomination. A cut above average to our eyes, and among the finest examples of the issue seen thus far by NGC – just one specimen has outshone the present coin on the NGC Census. A treat for an alert specialist!
NGC Census: 4; 1 finer (MS-63).
