1849 Oregon Exchange Company $5. Kagin-1. Rarity-5. Genuine – Holed/Plug – VF Details PCGS.
Holed and plugged at noon relative to the obverse, and with the visual appearance of a one-time jewelry piece. The surfaces are hairlined and marked considerably under low magnification, but it is an accumulation of tiny contact marks rather than a few scattered, harsh marks.

The only collectable pioneer Gold Rush coin struck in Oregon. Originally planned as an official issue of the Provisional Government, Oregon became a Territory of the United States on March 3, 1849 and was therefore prohibited by the U.S. Constitution from issuing coins. However an enterprising group comprised of some of the same legislators who proposed the Government Mint, and now calling themselves the Oregon Exchange Company, took over the minting equipment and started striking $5 and $10 gold pieces in late March or early April-- thereby predating the California private gold companies by over a month!
This specimen is an aesthetically pleasing representative of those early Pioneer days in Oregon and well worth inclusion in a type set of like issues; the plug is difficult to locate and does not affect any of the design.
