Title: 1843 $5. Winter 10-G. Medium D. MS-61 PCGS.
Header: Mint State 1843-D Half Eagle
Medium D Mintmark

Description: The satiny and fully brilliant lemon-yellow surfaces of this lustrous half eagle offer a whisper of olive toning and plenty of overall eye appeal. Marks are few and scant in the somewhat reflective fields, and the strike is impressive and sharp for a Dahlonega half eagle; you won’t find one much sharper! As a date, the 1843-D half eagle is a beacon for those students who do their numismatic homework; its lofty mintage of 98,452 pieces affords today’s collectors an opportunity to add a half eagle from one of our most fabled mints to a growing cabinet without breaking a budget. However, Mint State pieces are nowhere near as plentiful as VF to AU specimens of the date, with perhaps fewer than 20 coins known all told in MS-60 or finer – and “or finer” does not reach far up the grading scale. This means hearty bidding activity and competition at bidding time, so be prepared to give it your best, or be prepared to be disappointed.

PCGS Population: 5; 8 finer (MS-64 finest).
