Absolutely mark-free to the unaided eye, this exceptional lightly circulated Gobrecht dollar is one of 1,000 pieces struck for intended circulation in December, 1836; many of the pieces known today are prooflike or even considered Proofs, and just as many are evenly circulated, proving their use as circulating medium. The present coin is exceptional for the grade with warm dove-gray surfaces that offer pale rose toning on the high points. When turned on its horizontal axis, the reverse eagle flies “onward and upward” in a field of 26 stars of varying sizes, 13 large stars for the original Colonies, and 13 smaller stars for the additional 13 states added after we became a sovereign nation. This classic issue represents the first true dollar coinage in America since 1803, and any collection of early dollars, 1794-1873, is in need of a Gobrecht dollar to complete the cycle. Always popular when lightly circulated, we imagine a bold bout of bidding activity before this classic silver dollar is hammered home to its proud new owner. PCGS #11225
