Judd-60

Description: Dies as illustrated. Here is an exceptional coin in all regards. The uniform rose-gray surfaces are afire with gun-metal blue iridescence, especially under a bright light, and the aesthetic quality is highlighted by a near total absence of marks of any degree. Further, this specimen holds up just as well to magnified scrutiny. The famous Judd-60, as offered here, was the first of the new design type by Christian Gobrecht, after sketches by Thomas Sully and Titan Peale, as well as the first dollar coinage since 1803. Some 1,000 examples of Judd-60 were struck for intended circulation, mainly distributed in Philadelphia, and circulate they did. There are many more circulated examples of Judd-60 known than there are Proof or Mint State pieces. (The designation of pieces that never circulated is split between the “Proof Party” and the “Mint State Party.”) The reverse eagle flying “onward and upward” at a sharp angle amid a field of 13 large and 13 small stars is an iconic masterpiece that has thrilled collectors since 1836; the collecting population was mighty thin in those days and we are fortunate that so many pleasing examples of the variety exist today. The present piece is as close to a “Gem” Proof-55 coin as you will ever find, to our eyes and to CAC’s eyes as well, so be certain to bid accordingly.
