This beautiful Gem Capped Bust quarter tells its own tale of quality and high aesthetics at first glance, and then holds the viewer captive from that point on. The lilac-gray surfaces are alive with a near firestorm of iridescent toning highlights. Soft underlying luster on both sides supports pastel orange-rose centers with outwardly progressing bands of violet, electric blue, gold, crimson, and other subtle shades too numerous to mention. The strike is fair enough for the date; the obverse shows trifling weakness at the center, but the reverse is conversely sharper. In-hand or under a loupe, the quality of this early quarter is outstanding. Marks of any size are entirely inconsequential and can be counted on the fingers of one hand, even after a diligent search.

No doubt a Condition Census example of the variety, this lovely coin is bound to attract strong bidding. Back in 2013, Stack’s Bowers sold a gem MS-65 example of the date for $27,025, and in June 0014 Heritage sold the Gardner MS-65 PCGS example of the date for a resounding $55,812.50; that piece was a later die state with advanced reverse cracks, however. We feel the present coin is sharper than the Gardner piece, though we only have the photo of that specimen to work with. No matter, the present Gem Capped Bust quarter speaks for itself, and loudly at that! Don’t let this world-class quarter get away.

PCGS Population: 10; 3 finer (all MS-66) among all submissions for the date. Among 1815 quarters encapsulated specifically as Browning-1 by PCGS, the present coin is tied for finest certified with one other MS-65 example.
