1805 Cohen-3, Breen-3. Small 5, Stems. Rarity-4. VF-20 PCGS.
This evenly circulated half cent is pleasing steel-brown in appearance throughout, and only faintly marked in spite of the lengthy time spent in pocket change. From the second use of the obverse die (following Cohen-2, Breen-2), here with a noticeable bulge in the right obverse field that is inescapable for this variety. On the reverse, there is some central weakness affecting the H of HALF and the CE in CENT, otherwise the devices afford the sharpness on both sides that should be expected for the assigned grade. This somewhat elusive variety is typically found in low grades, say Fine and below, and VF specimens are not a commonplace item in today’s numismatic marketplace. PCGS has no listings for a Mint State example of the variety, see below, and NGC has seen few examples of the variety at any grade. Whether a seasoned old salt or a novice half cent fancier, the present example should appeal to you. It is amply pleasing for the assigned grade with enough detail to warrant the VF niche, and scarce enough to ensure it won’t be a cake walk at bidding time. Watch the bids fly when this one comes up for sale.
