1804 Private Restrike. MS-63 BN PCGS
This perennial favorite with large cent collectors was struck from a badly cracked, rusted, and re-worked 1803 obverse die coupled with the reverse die of an 1820 Matron head cent. It is thought some 400 to 700 examples of this concoction after-the-fact could exist, and many are in Mint State. The obverse of the present piece is deep golden brown throughout with a blaze of bright and frosty orange at LIBERTY, the date, and along Liberty’s profile. The modestly reflective reverse can best be called lilac-tan with traces of rich blue iridescence in a bold light source. “By whom struck is unknown, but it was at a period long after, when the dies were rusty, and certainly not at the Mint,” wrote coin dealer Charles Steigerwalt in the February, 1907 issue of The Numismatist; at that time, he referred to this issue as “these abominations.” The present example is far from an “abomination,” as one glance can tell. Its Mint State nature is readily apparent, and its quaint but nefarious charm shines through. Here is the perfect combination of grade, quality, and availability.
