Though one of the most frequently encountered date and die combinations of the design type, 1797-1804, the present coin smacks of originality, and if “doctored” at any time in recent memory it escapes our eyes. The deep yellow-gold surfaces glow with a wealth of deeper gold and peach toning highlights, and surface blemishes are at an absolute minimum to the naked eye. Additionally, the strike was bold to begin with, and light circulation has barely diminished the design high points. Struck from a clashed obverse die with a display of vertical “spikes” – caused by the vertical stripes in the reverse shield – in the folds of Miss Liberty’s cap and the topmost curl there. Choice for the grade with an overall visual appeal that would do justice to just about any early gold cabinet.
