A pleasingly lustrous half eagle from the final year of the 18th Century, deep yellow-gold in appearance with lively sunset orange highlights in the protected areas, particularly on the reverse. Scattered light marks are present commensurate with the grade, but the overall appearance is substantial. Struck from clashed dies and a late state of the reverse with cuds in the dentils above NIT and again above the first T of STATES. The Bass-Dannreuther reference suggests some 125 to 175 examples of this variety can be accounted for today. Often selected for inclusion in early gold type sets – the date and grade combination is tailor-made for today’s collecting community.
