1796 Draped Bust. Sheldon-93. Single Leaves, Reverse of ’95. Rarity-3. AU Details – Altered Surfaces – PCGS.
This specimen is warm and appealing in-hand in spite of the PCGS qualifier. Careful examination reveals what appear to be lightly cleaned surfaces that have been recolored; the somewhat unnatural orange from the cleaning peeks through in places. Now let’s consider the coin overall. The obverse is pleasing golden brown throughout while the reverse is a shade or so darker. Other than some well-hidden natural corrosion around RTY and Liberty’s forehead, the obverse is remarkably free of unsightly blemishes. The reverse shows a natural planchet flaw at the rim above ICA, but precious little else. The sharpness is first-class throughout both sides. Struck from clashed dies with the reverse wreath details plainly seen around Liberty’s portrait. A reverse die crack drops diagonally downward to the top of the R and runs from there across the tops of ICA before slowly curving back to the rim beyond the A. All things considered, the present S-93 is well worth in-person examination. At arm’s length, this coin is an absolute charmer, and we imagine it may have fooled a collector or two along the way. We expect to see a favorable judgement from our bidders when this highly collectable cent comes up for their approval.
