1794 Flowing Hair H10¢. LM-4, V-4, 4-A. Rarity-4. Genuine - Planchet Flaw - Fine Details PCGS. This warm steel-gray specimen offers a lot of eye appeal for the grade, and other than the PCGS qualifier, this half dime fared well despite a prolonged stay in pocket change; no marks of any significance assail the unaided eye. Though dated 1794, the first year authorized for silver coinage at the Mint, these were struck in late January and February, 1795, right alongside the Flowing Hair half dimes dated 1795. From the late state of the dies, both sides heavily cracked as called for in the Logan McCloskey reference. The noted planchet flaw is a horizontal hollow at the 6 o’clock position on the reverse, a pre-strike flaw that offers insight into the state of Mint technology at the time. Plenty of detail remains in the designs, and the present piece is worth more than just a casual glance.
