Title: 1793 Chain AMERICA Cent. Sheldon-2. Rarity-4+. Fine-15 NGC
Header: Famed 1793 Chain AMERICA Cent
Description: A robust golden-brown example of the fledgling Philadelphia Mint’s first coinage. Here is an evenly worn specimen with solid details present in Miss Liberty’s tresses, strong LIBERTY and date details, and a reverse that is not far off a grade finer than that determined by NGC. There are some distractions, of course, including a modest obverse rim bruise at 3 o’clock, and a few tiny blemishes that come to light there under low magnification. The reverse is basically sharp and problem-free within the motifs, including the chain links, but a scattering of tiny rim knocks is noted. Still, there is probably not an active collector who wouldn’t enjoy the stewardship of this earliest ancestor to all things Philadelphia Mint-related. Offering a Chain cent in this respectable lower grade range allows numerous collectors the opportunity that they might not otherwise have to pursue a true American copper classic. Whenever a Chain cent changes hands, it generally results in a busy and competitive occasion, and we expect no less from this lot.
