1783 NOVA CONSTELATIO Copper. Blunt rays variety. XF45 PCGS.
High grade specimens of Nova coppers are always popular and in demand. The five distinctive types that make up this series are relatively easy to acquire making this an ideal challenge for collectors to complete before moving on to more complex fields like the coins of New Jersey or Connecticut. The specimen here offered is an above average example of a coin that saw only moderate circulation and still displays a clean unblemished planchet with bold lettering and design.

The Nova Constellatio coins were all dated either 1783 or 1785. They show no indication of a denomination and, like so many other coins of that era, were called simply “coppers” and passed at a variable value simply to make change. Large quantities of these coins were produced in England and shipped to New York where they entered circulation.
