Title: 1723 Wood’s Hibernia Halfpenny. Copper. 11 Harp Strings. MS-65 RB PCGS. CAC
Header: Gem RB 1723 Hibernia Halfpenny
Description: The warm golden-tan surfaces of this widely adopted Irish halfpenny issue display an abundance of lively mint red brightness, especially so in the protected design areas. The strike is fairly crisp throughout except at Hibernia’s waist area on the reverse, as is somewhat typical for the issue. As with most examples of the issue, the dies here provided a scenario of clash marks, graver’s slips, and crumbling at the lettering. The Hibernia coinages, especially the halfpennies dated 1723, are among the few colonial-era coinages that are not overly difficult to obtain in AU or better grades – all that’s needed is a great deal of patience or for the old “right time, right place” axiom to fall into place. However, if Gem quality is a factor on your personal want list, the pickings become increasingly thin, even for this somewhat available type. Competition will be tough as like-minded bidders gather to take home this prize. Housed in an older-style green label PCGS holder with plastic frame.
PCGS Population: 10; 2 finer within the RB designation (both MS-66 RB). One of the 10 is designated “+” by PCGS.
