Title: 1722 Rosa Americana Halfpenny. Martin 1.1-A.1. Copper. Possibly Unique. Fine-15 PCGS.
Header: 1722 Rosa Americana Halfpenny Pattern
Ex Norweb

Description: 67.7 grains. Dies as illustrated. Medium to dark brown with some old scratches across the base of the bust. In the 1988 Norweb Collection catalog, this coin was presented as a “Possibly Unique” type based on the presence of a colon between ROSA and AMERICANA. PCGS calls this a “Pattern” based on Walter Breen’s specific designations. The dies used to strike this coin exhibit all of the characteristics of a late state of Reverse A.1. The obverse is Martin’s 1.1, which is paired only with Reverse A.1, further cementing the attribution. The lower dot of the colon appears to be a raised bubble in the metal; additional raised bubbles appear in other areas of the reverse. To its credit, this is a possibly unique rarity, and a coin with a great backstory. Lacking in virtually all specialized Rosa Americana collections.
