1875 Proof-65 Cameo PCGS.
Here is an exceptional gem example of a likewise exceptional rarity. The warm orange-gold surfaces are lustrous and play host to wisps of bold orange iridescence. The central devices are lightly dusted with frost, affording a pleasing though modest cameo effect. The fields are deep orange mirrors and the devices are needle-sharp. A glass reveals nearly countless raised die polish lines in the deep mirror obverse field. A small patch of original planchet surface can be seen in the obverse field below Liberty’s chin, a hallmark of the piece.

Evidently, 1875 was a lean year in Philadelphia for gold coinage; just 400 quarter eagles -- $1,000 face value – were struck for circulation against a short order of only 20 Proofs. In fact, the only Philadelphia Mint gold denomination of the year that isn’t considered a prized rarity today is the 1875 double eagle. PCGS has enumerated a dozen grading events for Proofs of the date, a figure that includes all three of the firm’s Proof designations. Across the street at NGC, there have been 10 certification events for the issue, a figure that includes all three of that firm’s Proof categories. The combined grand total for Proof certification events for the date at those two services stands at 22, but we expect there may have been a resubmission or two along the road. Whatever the actual total known figure is for Proofs of the date today, it has to be 20 or fewer pieces! Here is an opportunity that comes along only once in a great while. Whenever an 1875 Proof quarter eagle makes an auction appearance, it is a bona fide mini-event. Now is your chance to become steward to a numismatic treasure of no small regard.
PCGS Population: 4; none finer.
