1858 Flying Eagle cent - Small Letters, Laurel Wreath reverse - 5 leaf. J-191a. P-233. S-PT14. R5. PR64 PCGS (PS). OGH. Choice Proof (11: 3,4,4).
Part of the 12-piece cent set that was a sold by the Mint 1858 and a few years beyond. The Mint paired three obverse designs – Flying Eagle, Small Letter; Small Eagle; and Indian head – with four reverse designs – Regular reverse of 1858, Low Leaves; Oak Wreath; Ornamental Shield; Laurel Wreath, 5 leaf. These sets are widely collected today and are hotly contested when they show up for sale. The Issues with the Flying Eagle obverse are the most desirable due to the tie-in with the Proof Flying eagle cents. Of the Flying Eagle obverse die pairs, the regular issue 1858 Small Letters is the most popular, since it is also collected as the regular issue. After that comes this piece, which has the reverse similar to the design adopted in 1859. This is known as one of the “Transitional” die pairs.
This example has good mirror surfaces, exceptional strike and a light golden color. A small spot by the rim on the obverse at 5:00 limits the grade as does a stain on the T in CENT on the reverse. Only 75 examples were struck. PCGS has 20 grading events listed with only 6 examples higher.
