1865 Proof-65 PCGS. OGH.
This warm orange-gold Proof No Motto half eagle is a product of the Mint during the Civil War; indeed, it’s the last date able to claim that status. Decidedly cameo-like but housed in an OGH from an era perhaps before the Cameo designation came into popular use. The frosted motifs and mirrored fields enjoy pleasing mellowed orange highlights across both sides. The strike is needle sharp and the familiar “crinkly” orange peel surface is retained throughout the fields. Just three naked-eye blemishes are available, including a toning fleck in the field near the tip of Liberty’s nose, another at the top of her tiara at star 7, and a reverse field mark beneath the second T of STATES. After that it’s time for a loupe, but if it’s major disturbances you are looking for, you are out of luck; this is, after all, a Gem Proof half eagle.

Only 25 Proofs of the date and denomination were struck, a surprisingly small figure when the slightly larger Proof production runs of the 1861-1864 Civil War years are considered. Of the mintage for the date, somewhat fewer than 20 specimens can be accounted for today; PCGS gives the figure as “15 to 20 known” and Breen opined “about 8-10 survive” back in 1988. The total number of grading events for PCGS and NGC for this date is 21 pieces, and leaving room for the resubmissions that occur routinely for rarities, the PCGS suggested population of 15 to 20 coins could very well be spot-on. Still, that figure seems perhaps a shade too high to our experience. Proof 1865 half eagles – and most dates of its era – come to auction so infrequently that collectors will experience long dry spells before a specimen is offered. Devoted specialists in the Liberty half eagle series know the importance and desirability of the date as well as the high demand for golden rarities whenever they enter the numismatic marketplace. The present Gem Proof 1865 half eagle will make a grand entrance at bidding time, and no doubt will make just as grand an exit.
PCGS Population: 1; 1 finer (Proof-66).
