1859 Gold $1. Judd-256. Copper. Rarity-7. Proof-63 BN PCGS.
Fiery deep orange, cobalt blue, and rich violet completely engulf both sides of this deeply toned specimen. Obverse: extremely similar to the regular issue gold dollars of the date. Reverse: same comment. The uspatterns.com website has the following to say about J-256: “The status of this piece is uncertain. It looks similar but inferior in quality to Paquet's design of 1858, J-222/J-223. Its relief is lower and appears less polished which causes many people to believe it to be a private issue. Whatever its status, an example was listed as lot 2974 in Woodward's March 1865 Bache I sale.” Always popular with today’s pattern collectors.

PCGS Population: 2; 3 finer within the BN designation (all Proof-64 BN).
