August 1, 1834. C. Bechtler $5 Gold. Kagin-17b. Unique. With 140 G, No C, No Star. Plain Edge. EF-45 PCGS.
This evenly circulated deep yellow gold half eagle exhibits deep smoky orange highlights in the protected areas. Scattered marks are present, commensurate with the grade, yet the surfaces are free of heavy or unsightly disturbances overall. We note a natural planchet flaw, as struck, at the S in CARATS, and another larger flaw, as struck, at ER in RUTHERFORD on the reverse. Only the final A of CAROLINA has a crossbar; the others are the usual inverted V. Some striking weakness is noted at 2 o’clock on the obverse and correspondingly at 9 o’clock on the reverse.

Discovered in 1983 by numismatist Danny Freeman and sold privately to Don Kagin and then into the Allan Collection. No others have been discovered since. An entirely new type deserving of a new Kagin #, but currently designated as K17b.

In this rare pairing, the C of C. BECHTLER and the nearly ever-present five-pointed star have been left out of the design. Here is yet another great rarity from the Allan Collection, a cabinet that may not be duplicated again for scope of completeness and overall quality in our lifetimes. The best bidders can hope for – unless they are extremely fortunate – is to bring home one or two pieces from the Allan holdings. Many bidders will reach for this important coin, but only one successful bidder will claim it outright.

Obverse: CAROLINA GOLD. at rim from 8 to 4 o’clock around, AUGUST 1, 1834 in a semi-circle at center, 140 / .G. within, 20. above CARATS at rim below.
Reverse: BECHTLER. AT RUTHERFORD around, 5 at center, DOLLARS curves below.
Die Alignment: about 15 degrees or just past medal turn.

PCGS Population: 1; none finer.

Ex: From the Allen Collection.
